Brief Timeline of Significant Events

 This is only a summary timeline of significant events that have occurred since 1893 relating to the company.  This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list, and should not be viewed as such.  Rather, it is a way to see how the company began and evolved to its current form today.  Amherst Madison is proud of its history and origins, and we’re happy to show you some of the events that have led to the company that is present today. 

1893

Brothers Charles T. Jones and George W. Jones form the Star Coal and Coke Company of Fayette County, WV

1912

Amherst Coal Company incorporated

1915

Madison Coal and Supply incorporated

1916

Amherst Fuel Company incorporated

1922

Logan County Coal Corporation incorporated

1949

Amherst Barge Company was formed

1950

Amherst Coal Company and Logan County Coal Corporation jointly acquired Hatfield Campbell Creek Coal Company

1951

Amherst Coal Company and Logan County Coal Corporation merged

1955

Steamer J.S. Lewis becomes the first towboat added to the Amherst fleet

1956

Postal authorities rename town of Reed, WV to Port Amherst

1960

Amherst Barge Company name was changed to Amherst Industries, Inc.

1962

The Campbell’s Creek Railroad Company merged with Amherst Fuel Company

1970

World’s longest railroad flatcar was built for Keiser Aluminum at Port Amherst

1970

Amherst Industries transferred river operations to wholly owned subsidiary Madison Coal & Supply Company

1981

Diamond Shamrock Corporation agrees to acquire the Amherst Coal Company

1983

Port Amherst, Ltd. incorporated and purchased Amherst Industries, Madison Coal & Supply Company

2010

Madison Coal and Supply Company is renamed Amherst Madison, Inc. The new company becomes the primary operating company and is primarily made up of three river-based divisions (Towing, Construction, and Marine Repair)

2010

Long time President of Madison Coal and Supply Company, O. Nelson Jones passed away. Former Officer of Madison Coal and Supply, Herbert E. Jones, Jr. passed away

2016

Amherst Madison, Inc. acquires land and assets from the former O-Kan Marine Repair, Inc. in Gallipolis, OH

2016

Port Amherst, Ltd. Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) was established

2019

Amherst Madison, Inc. becomes 100% employee owned through the ESOP

2019

Long time CEO and President of Amherst Madison, inc., Charles T. Jones II passed away at the age of 101
